I Survived

This class has gone by so fast, I can’t believe that it’s over! People said that junior year would be the most difficult year in high school, and now I know what they mean. Yes, I expected to make improvements in my reading and writing skills while being in AP English, but I did not expect myself to be the reader and writer I am now. AP English was a journey for me , and even affected me as a person. The skills that I have learned this year will help me in life in the future. These skills also have helped me in different subjects, such as writing essays for American History. I like challenges, so that’s why I chose this class. I look forward to having you as my teacher again next year, and to continue improving on my writing and test taking skills.

Now, when I look at my work from the past year, I have seen growth in my essays. My reading skills have also improved. Before I had trouble understanding some of the essays and short stories that you gave us. Not only have I improved as a reader and writer, I also became a better test taker. When you first gave us multiple choice questions from the AP test I became very nervous. I did not think that I would be able to answer them because the choices for the question were very complex and specific that all of the answers seemed correct to me. I can now easily narrow the choices down and answer the questions. For a while, my essays would constantly score 5‘s. I know that wasn’t a bad score, but I was tired of receiving straight 5‘s. Finally, I scored my first 6 and became very excited, and kept increasing through out time. Practice makes perfect!

I feel as though I am ready to face the English regents next week. The material and techniques that you have taught me throughout the year has made me more confident when writing essays in other classes. Although this class requires a large amount of work, I enjoyed it. English has always been my favorite core subject, and you, out of all of my English teachers have made me enjoy it even more. And I’m not just saying that to be a teachers pet!

For your future students taking this class, hand everything in on time! I slacked off first quarter, and that did not turn out too well. I believe everyone is a procrastinator, and that’s okay, just make sure you get the work done on time and handed in on time! Another tip is to be in class on time, everyday. If you miss one day, you’ll miss a lot of important and helpful information. I wish your future students the best! And I hope that you have a great summer Ms. Fogarty! Thank you for everything! See you in September!

  1. Dear Belen,
i completely agree with you when you said junior year is the hardest year to go through. I believe that I could have achieved more in this class if I did not slack off in the first quarter as well. You are definitely correct when you say if you are absent one day, you will miss a lot of information. I was absent from that class and i was bombarded with a bunch of make-up work. It was hard to catch up in that class because she would move on to her next lesson. I am a procrastinator and I agree that it is okay to be one as long as the work is in on time. Ms. Fogarty taught me a lot of new material and I also feel that I am ready for the regents in a couple of weeks! This class flew by and I cannot believe that it is finally over. I love that you said that this class also helped your writing skills in other classes, that statement is very true. I also feel, that I can write way better in my other classes because of the AP class. Have a wonderful summer Belen!

  2. Dear Belen,
I completely agree with you when you said, that you did not expect yourself to become the reader and writer you are now because of AP English. AP English helped me to grow as a reader and a writer, as it did for you. I also agree with you, that what we learned in this class we will take with us into the future. Ms. Fogarty’s teachings have definitely prepared me for the English Regents test, as you had also said. The techniques she has taught us really helped me to become more confident in my writings. I know what should be put into essays and what should not be put in. This class helped my writing skills in other classes also improve. When we were first given AP multiple choice questions, I was intimidated. As the year went on I became more comfortable with what would be appearing on the AP test. I also agree with you that future students should hand things in on time so they don’t lose points for every day the assignment is due. This class did fly by very fast and it’s almost a year away that we have to take what we learned from this class into our future. Have a good summer!
